30 Years of A Goofy Movie

This year marks 30 years of A Goofy Movie and I can’t think of a better movie to celebrate! Who doesn’t love Goofy? And Max is just as lovable! The movie is such a heartwarming coming of age story and shows the evolution of a father and sons relationship. It’s funny and sweet and relatable, everything you want in a good Disney movie. So, I thought this week we would stroll down memory lane with A Goofy Movie and see what’s new as well!

Goofy!

Where It Started

Back in the 90’s all of us kids were watching Goof Troop on The Disney Afternoon! After that ended in 1992 the only natural thing to do was make a movie right? A Goofy Movie is meant to take place 3 years after the final Goof Troop episode and follows Goofy and his son Max on their coming of age, father son adventures. Disney wanted to give Goofy more emotional depth and make him resonate with audiences like Mickey and Donald already did. The casting for Goofy, PJ and Pete stayed the same, James Marsden took over as the voice of Max and we got some new characters!

The Movie & The Music

A Goofy Movie released in theaters on April 7th, 1995. The movie was met with mixed reviews and only grossed $37.6 million compared to the $18 million it cost to produce the movie. BUT, once the movie went to home video (yes VHS tape in the puffy case) it became a cult classic that we all still love today! This movie has some of the best music too. Who here can resist wanting to get up and dance when I2I or Stand Out comes on? Not only are they bops, the lyrics are meaningful and not perfectly into the movie. The music and the theme of a parent and child growing up together and coming together to understand one another is the reason this movie has stood the test of time. Plus the incredible 90’sness!!

The Goofy Movie Characters

You are familiar with Goofy and Pete and probably Max (Goofy’s son) and PJ (Pete’s son) but what about the rest of the characters? Roxanne is Max’s love interest. She is sweet but holds you to the fire and definitely into guys on the weirder side who stand out. Her friend, Stacy who is such a funny and lovable character with the best 90’s hat ever. Of course we have Powerline, only the greatest rockstar of all time, voiced by Tevin Campbell. You know the music is gonna be good when you have a 90’s pop star voicing Powerline! And finally, Bobby, voiced by Pauly Shore and obsessed with spray cheese. He is the best best friend a Goof could ask for! Not gonna lie, Bobby steals the spotlight sometimes, but in the best way.

The Other Goofy Movies

You may not know it but there was a sequel to A Goofy Movie released directly to video in February of 2000. An Extremely Goofy Movie was definitely not as good as A Goofy Movie but still very fun. It has never been as popular as A Goofy Movie but if you find yourself needing more Goofy in your life, it’s there. In May of 2024 Disney debuted a documentary titled “Not Just A Goof” that follows the production of A Goofy Movie. The documentary shows how the movie became a cult classic and is directed by two super fans of the movie. The documentary premiered on Disney+ on April 7th, 2025 to celebrate 30 years of A Goofy Movie! This is a must watch!
